Genetic Education Networking for Innovation and Excellence   University of Leicester

In 2005 HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) invested over £300 million into establishing 74 Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs) in England. GENIE which stands for Genetic Education Networking for Innovation and Excellence is the only genetics CETL in the UK. The work of GENIE includes developing educational resources and approaches in Higher Education, establishing a national network of institutions engaged in teaching genetics, developing a Virtual Genetics Education Centre and running outreach programmes for schools and colleges, health professionals and the wider public.

One of GENIE's projects, 'Genetics in the community' is a collaboration between GENIE and the Department of Clinical Genetics at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. One of the main aims of the project is to raise awareness of genetics in Leicestershire's community through innovative approaches e.g. developing audio-visual materials, recruiting and training "community champions" and working closely with health professionals.

Would you like to be a Community Champion?

We would like to hear from enthusiastic members or leaders of the community who have experience of working with community groups and organisations. They must possess excellent communication skills, be able to speak good English and ideally, at least one South Asian language (i.e. Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi or Urdu).

Some of the community champion's responsibilities will include: arranging suitable groups for GENIE to talk to about genetics, advising GENIE on the best strategies to take when approaching certain communities or giving talks to small community groups about basic genetics.

Community champions will not need an in-depth understanding of genetics as training will be given, though having basic biological knowledge would be beneficial. This post will be on a consultancy basis and GENIE is flexible in terms of how many hours each community champion would like to contribute towards this project (maximum 40 hours per year). The salary will be dependent on relevant experience (£6 to 10 per hour).

Would you like to have your say on how audio-visual materials on genetics are developed?

We are also looking for members of the public aged between 18 and 60 who can spare a little time (less than an hour) for a discussion about audio-visual materials. This discussion will require you to watch two short clips and give your opinion on these clips (i.e. what you liked/disliked about them). All the information that you give us will be treated as confidential and your name will not be published in any way. Your views will help us to develop further audio-visual materials about genetics. To say thank you for taking the time to speak to us, you will be entered into a prize draw to win £50 worth of high-street vouchers.

Attending community events/ talking to community groups

If you are holding an event in the community and would like us to bring an information stall about genetics or you would like us to come and do a small talk with your community, please feel free to contact us.

For more information about taking part in this project, please contact Heena on (0116) 252 3319 or visit our website: http://www.le.ac.uk/genetics/genie
